It has been compared to the majesty of the Himalayan Mountains, its lush orchards and green pastures surrounded by snow-capped mountains being quite different from the usual images of barren beauty readily associated with Morocco. The small towns with their mud brick and stony houses scattered throughout the valley enhance its unspoiled atmosphere.
The History of Ihansalen
Said Ahansal, the founder of Zaouiat Ahansal, was originally from the Aït Seghrouchen tribe north of Midelt. The Ihansalen call themselves cousins of this tribe.
Towards the year 1000 of the Christian calendar, Said Ahansal, future founder of the dynasty, wants to meet those Muslims who believe in a single god and know their religion. He goes to see the emir of the believers in Fez and attends the school of the royal court.
After studious years, he received the blessing of the king, who sent him with a recommendation, to a scholar, a master of the Koran in Safi.
A few years later, his new master told him that he had to leave because he had nothing more to teach him; And that it was time for him to found his own Zaouia. (brotherhood)
As a viaticum, the old master gives Said Ahansal, a cat, a sickle, a reed, a wooden spoon and a donkey.
The disciple asks the fqih what he should do
“You will travel on the donkey, you will found your Zaouia at the place where the cat will disappear; I give you the reed so that you can trim it and that your descendants do not lose the calamus to write the Koran. If you meet a peaceful man, offer him to eat with the spoon; If hostile, use the sickle, “his master replied.
Saïd Ahansal leaves Safi, passes through Marrakech, Demnate, Azilal, and finally arrives at the Aït Waster, an Amazighe tribe who did not know Islam, lost at the foot of the peaks, isolated from the world and the other tribes of the region. Amezray is a city already five centuries old while the urban civilization amazighe is almost non-existent for historians.
After losing the cat, which his master confided to him, on the edge of the assif Ahansal, Sidi Saïd decides to settle with the Aït Waster, takes wife to their home and fuses his Zaouïa, farther, upstream of the river , To Agoudim.
Today, “Amezray the new” is one of the four douars of Zaouïat Ahansal. It is in this valley that is buried Sidi Said Ahansal the founder of the dynasty of Ihansalen, in a modest mausoleum.
The emblem of the Ihansalem is a green flag crossed by a saber to say: “If you want peace, let’s make peace; If you want war, draw your saber. ”
